don’t you fucking dare make your website UNUSABLE with JS off.

You can keep USENET, thanks. For this site, specifically, that wouldn’t make much sense… but for the web at large?
Hobbling technology because some people don’t want to use it… or more severely, coding multiple versions because some people don’t want to accept changes in technology is contrary to the nature of the web. Doing it TOO SOON is ill advised: coding fully generated DHTML pages back in 2002 was bad… in 2008 its hardly notable. Same as (usually) an all Flash site.
1998 was a long time ago: We use css, Firefox, streaming video, Flash, and we don’t restrict web pages to a size of less than 50k… (The samurai hiding ninja cover image is 56)… Its a different web. Screw the buzzwords and feigned business interest, the Web has Changed.
Pick up your Univac* Programmer’s Manual and accept that things change. The Hooded Monk stubborn engineer paradigm doesn’t work anymore, and hasn’t for a decade.
