The point missed about the long-term aspect is that wages will inevitably creep up to parity over the long-term. This is fundamental to the theory of globalisation. The challenge is to ensure that parity is achieved by raising one party without lowering the other.
I think the shift to conceptual mastery over technical mastery is also driven by advancement in the tools themselves. I personally never get that close to the metal, nor do most developers need to.
