About 3 weeks ago, Leo Laporte and I recorded the first episode of what will be a new monthly show on the TWiT network. Naming things is hard, and we almost voted on the name, like we did for Stack Overflow, but we quickly landed on Off By One with Jeff Atwood. Which is funny for so many reasons, but mainly because of this programmer joke:
Jeff: And the other thing is, you can just run the math on this, I’ve posted several times on Mastodon and other places like LinkedIn, I’ve done some research and if we simply collected a fair tax from Billionaires, we could literally elimate all poverty in this country at the 100% FPL level, which is $15,000 per year. All poverty. We would have zero poverty. We have the means to do it."
do you talk about how you’d use your billionaire tax in the video ? That’s quite an interesting subject
Sure; it’d be implemented the same way it is through https://rgmii.org via a non-profit, not the viciously exploitative for-profit “means testing industrial complex”. The whole point is to give the money to those in most need of it, ala “trickle up”. Because we sure as hell know “trickle down” (aka give the rich more money and add thoughts and prayers) does not work.
Also! For those of you that read the comments, let me reward you.
Anyone who wants a free year long Club TWiT membership, watch the first episode (#2), decide for yourself if it’s worth your time, then fill out this form and I’ll happily cover your first year membership costs, so you can see all the shows, too :
(limited to 10 slots, but at least 4 were available last I heard an hour ago)
Maybe I misunderstood the OP - I thought it was possible to listen to the new show, ad-supported, as a non subscriber. The FAQ you linked looks like it’s for the “club” only. There must be some kind of public feed because I found an “all shows” list in Pocket Casts, but Off By One is not on that feed.
2. Club TWiT: in the Club TWiT+ Shows feed that they can put into any podcatcher of their choice.
OBO is Club-supported. Normally, TWiT wait 30 days before making Club events publicly available on YouTube, but they’ve confirmed that they’re putting OBO out the same day via the methods listed above.
Hope this solves your initial request for how to watch!
Ok, it sounds like the show is available ad-supported on YouTube but the podcast feed is only for (paid) Club members? That’s kind of a bummer because I have probably 20x as much time for podcasts (driving, doing chores, etc) as time to watch stuff on YT
I hear you, and it is intended as both an audio and video experience.
Here is episode #3 of the Off By One show, hot off the presses, recorded about 11 hours ago (2pm pacific).
If you can “listen” to YouTube as audio only that’d probably be the way. I am extremely allergic to podcasts and audio-only stuff, I don’t know why exactly, but I just can’t ever do audio stuff.
Not that I am watching videos 24/7 either, but for a given time investment, I’d personally always prefer music over people talking as a rule. I totally understand there’s a commute or attention thing where audio has to work, and simply “listening” to the youtube stream with video suppressed should work.
I may do that for a couple one-off episodes, but I pay for cell data by the gig so I generally avoid YT on the road. (I’m actually about to finish a week at sea - we had Starlink, but their marine plan is metered too so I downloaded days of podcasts in advance.)
Yeah the availability thing does seem muddled. The form for free club memberships makes it sound like club-only, but then Jeff’s framing of “watch the first episode” to decide if it’s worth it suggests it’d be publicly available somewhere first. You’d think they’d clarify that upfront given the whole point of a new show is probably getting people to actually watch it.
Hey there! When the show first started, a clear decision hadn’t been made about it being public or private / for club members. What we’ve since learned is that TWiT considers it public, so it does go up onto YouTube for everyone after it’s been aired.
The real benefit for club members is access to the private Discord during live events across all of TWiT.tv networks, where you get to chat with others (and Leo’s team) during the live stream, make episode title recommendations, vote on future topics, etc. There are a lot of shows associated with the network and membership gets you the above access for all of those.
The live video is also streamed to club members first (sometimes it’s on YT live, but not always).
I hope this helps clear up the difference, and what membership provides and doesn’t provide here.
TL;DR - It’s been made into a public show and episodes will appear after they’ve been recorded/edited on the Off by One site. But for the live interaction and discord community fun, you have to be a paid member of Club TWiT.
