Keyboarding: Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000

Problem corrected. Enabled USB keyboard support in BIOS. Works fine now. Very nice keyboard.

Hello,
Is there anyone who had problems with using shortcut keys, like Alt + F4 to close the program, F12 to save as, etc. I just started using this keyboard, and this thing is annoying me. Please email me at umermariner@hotmail.com if you have the solution.
And yes, I am using this keyboard with windows 2000 Pro (work), and have not installed the software that came with it. Is it necessary for these options?
Thanks.

Bought a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard as work got me one and my old very good Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard had odd and strange insert and del keys.

These new black keyboards were fine for the first two months and very comfortable to use. The only problem was that the I key on both keyboards didn’t always seem to work. (This could be the way I’m typing.)

But after only two months the E key on both is worn off completely, the A, S, D and R keys are almost worn off. This has happened on both boards but not quite the same wear on each. It may be argued that this too is the way I’m typing except that this has never happened to me on any other keyboard and I’ve used a lot since 1980.

Unfortunately because it is a black keyboard I can’t write on it with a black permanent marker.

I’d not buy another.

Just purchased the MS Ergonomic 4000 and, so far, it’s just what I was looking for. However, my grandsons have found one slight flaw … when playing their favorite Internet game, which requires the use of the up and down arrows, the whole screen moves up and down which makes it hard for them to see their game board. Does anyone know of a fix to this or is this a hardware problem with this particular keyboard?

I see this discussion has been going on for a while. I have this keyboard for about 6 months now, it’s been a great 6 months with a few major exceptions.

The spacebar doesn’t bother me so much, it only took some use to get a little looser and more resonsive.

A problem similar to the Alt key problem that some other people here described has happened to me also. I try to read a website, scroll down with my mouse’s scroll wheel, the browser goes back one or several pages as if I held the Shift key while scrolling. This behaviour wasn’t consistent and fortunately didn’t happen very often.

Two days ago the keyboard basically stopped functioning at all because all of a sudden some keys don’t work any more. The regualr Enter doesn’t work, the numlock, scrolllock, capslock, f-lock etc don’t respond. (the enter on the numpad works). If I press the ā€˜z’ sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t, similar problem with the ā€˜c’ although if I press ā€˜c’ it sometimes show a ā€˜z’ or ā€˜xc’ or ā€˜cz’ or something like that. It also seems to create a scancode for backspace sometimes. On top of that some more keys have become erratic and the programmable multimedia keys act as if I’m holding them down (popping up the sreen that asks if I want to assign a function to them every couple of seconds).

The problem persists if I use a different USB port and also on a different computer. I am afraid it looks like a hardware problem that considering what other people write here is a little too common for my taste.

I had the volume problem, but when I used the keys the on-screen volume display would appear, but not move (in other words, I couldn’t change the volume). None of the above methods worked for me, but then I realised that I had two sound cards - one built in that I wasn’t using (I could even find the drivers) so the fix was to go to device manager and disable this sound card (right-click on the device, pick disable) reboot and now volume is working properly again!

Hope this is helpful.

Just Bought a wireless Egronomics 7000 Keyboard, having issues with the volume keys. They Don’t seem to work, not matter what I do. Everything else works fine, just the up and down volume keys.
Any kind of help would be appreciated, I like the keyboard overall. Don’t wanna return for something that small.

I shall be ordering one (or possibly two) of these in the next few days, given that it’s fully supported in a default Ubuntu 8.04.1 Linux install. I saw one in a local (UK) computer store tonight and fell in love with it, but wanted to read a few reviews first - it’s rare to find a product that receives such consistently excellent peer review and feedback.

The irony of purchasing a Microsoft keyboard to operate a Linux box isn’t lost on me either

I have this keyboard for almost 9 months. 6 months after buying it some letters started to worn off (W, M, B, D…). Letter W is nowadays almost gone… Keyboard is good but this flood is why I won’t recommend it to anyone.

the level of faggotry on this blog is really unprecedented

Thanks everybody for the useful discussion about this keyboard. Just got one myself, to replace one of my venerable Natural Keyboard Pros.

I’m still getting used to the comparatively mushy feel, lack of clickety-click sounds, and the frequent misses on the I and L keys. The I key in particular is ticking me off pretty badly! But other than these issues, which I’m hoping I’ll adapt to, I like the keyboard quite a bit.

OH-OH, WTF? NO RIGHT WIN-KEY?
If you’re like me, you’re really annoyed that there is no right-Windows-key. I use that all the time to Win-L and lock my station, etc., and I’d like to know what the heck they were thinking, leaving it off.

A SOLUTION, OFFERED:
Personally, I do not use the Application Key (AKA context menu key), which sits between the Right-Alt and Right-Ctrl keys. Since that’s an ideal location for a Right-WinKey substitute, I started looking for a way to remap the key as desired. I wanted to do this without having to install some additional utility. I’ve got enough crammed into this box, as it is!

Long story short, it’s easy enough to achieve. The following registry change will accomplish this task: Your AppKey will start acting as if it were a Right-WinKey.

BIG, SERIOUS REGISTRY-EDIT WARNING:
Don’t try this fix unless you know exactly what you’re doing, and have taken appropriate backup measures. You could royally bork your keyboard mapping. I accept no responsibility if you muck up your box. And, BE CAREFUL! 'Nuf said.

  1. Open the registry editor.
  2. Locate the following key. NOTICE! It is NOT the Keyboard Layouts registry key, it’s the Keyboard Layout key. No S at the end. Don’t mess with the other one. Anyway, find this key:
    \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
  3. Under that key, create a new binary value named Scancode Map.
  4. Right-click this new binary value, and choose modify binary data from the context menu.
  5. Change the data to EXACTLY these bytes:
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    02 00 00 00 5C E0 5D E0
    00 00 00 00
  6. OK the change and exit the registry editor. Reboot.
  7. After you restart, your AppKey should now act as if it is a Right-WinKey. As a test, you can press it and the start menu should appear.

CITATIONS:
If you want to research similar mappings, here is some of the background material I read when finding out how to do this:

  1. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/scancode.mspx
  2. http://www.usnetizen.com/fix_capslock.php

Bear in mind that the scancodes are represented as little-endian in the registry entry, which is why some of them appear reversed from certain things shown in the citations above. Also, this change, as described, will affect all users on the computer. Alternative keys are available on a user-by-user basis, but that is left as an exercise for the reader (as they say). And naturally, you can make other mapping changes using this technique and the references above. Just be sure you identify the right scan codes, and order the bytes correctly.

Hope this helps somebody!
Cheers,
Mike

Parece que al final, este teclado tiene ms problemas que ventajas. Eso os pasa por geeks. (debera traducir esto al ingls pero no tengo ganas) :=)

How do I get the show my favorites window from popping up all the time. My computer goes to sleep after a period of inactivity. My computer is in my office and as I sit in the living room I can see thru my french office doors that window pop up and fire my computer back up. I’m not sure if something maybe vibrated a bit and started the computer back up, but I hate how that window is up everytime I come back to my computer.

This spacebar thing is amazing - I have the same problem. How can microsoft invest so much money into an ergonomic keyboard and then slip up by not having a good spacebar, most likely the most used key on the keyboard? Everything else about the keyboard is great but…my thumb muscle is already sore after using it for just a day. All I can hope is that it will get better.

OK - after making my last post I must say after use the space bar has become much better and am now quite happy with the keyboard. I also did the twist tweak suggest a href=http://www.paulstravelpictures.com/MS-Natural-Ergo-Keyboard-Sticky-Spacebar-Fix/index.htmlhere /a.

But another thing I can add is I have changed my typing style which suits the space bar much better and actually feels good. Before I would rest my thumb on the space bar at all times, and then press on it (and forward slightly) when I need it - this is when the space bar tends to become stuck in some sort of groove.

Instead, have your thumb away from it a bit and give it a bit more of a whack (using momentum instead of pressing force). It is quite sturdy and probably designed for this sort of use anyway - and feels fine (and doesn’t sound loud or anything). Would probably still recommend the twist trick though.

Anyone having the volume problem microsoft has a page on it had about 6 solutions and fixed mine

This is such an information blog i have seen in my whole life, i am seriously inspired by this blog entry and i am glad to post my views there. thanks to webmaster.

i have the same problem fox cole had - it’ll be fine for months, and then for 2 weeks straight or something it’ll keep happening where i’m typing and all of a sudden the keyboard goessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss and won’t stop until i unplug the damn thing. it’s either that repeating of a letter like i’m just holding the letter down, or the keyboard just stops all together as if it’s been unplugged. and then i actually have to unplug it and plug it back in before it works.

i don’t know what to do! i know fox said yours fell and that fixed the problem - but it’s not working with me as i’ve been so angry before i pushed the damn thing off my desk - no luck. still happens. i’m a transcriber and i can’t stop 17 times to unplug the damn thing everytime this happens! anyone else have this problem and have an actual fix for it?? thanks!

This is gonna huge, i just cant belive it that i am standing at a great blog of my life, i am really glad to have my comment here in very decent topic. thanks to webmaster.
